It’s the holiday season, and that means New Year’s is just around the corner. The time of year when we stop and examine what we’ve done well, what we are grateful for, and what we can improve on for next year.
Ah yes, the dreaded New Year’s resolution. So often we make goals that are grand and lofty, but we quit them in February. I’m here to tell you that creating real, lasting, positive change for yourself doesn’t have to work like that.
If you want real, lasting change in your life, here’s what you need to do.
Yup. Don’t wait until January rolls around to make the change. Start here, today, and now, to step into the changes that you want to see for yourself.
To make change sustainable, we have to take little, tangible steps towards our goals. The problem with making New Year’s resolutions is that we hype them up. We feel we need to have the biggest, most dramatic resolution, when in reality, lofty dreams without actionable steps will always fail us.
So think about what you want to achieve in 2017, and come up with a step you can take this week to get closer to your dreams.
Your New Year’s resolution should be something that you care about – that you are passionate about. Something you are willing to fight for. It should be something that you can’t wait until January to start working towards.
We often view holidays as a bit of a free pass — we eat what we want, we drink what we want, and we spend how we want. But how much stress does that cause us later?
Instead of treating the holidays like a free pass, think of it as a time to set your intention for the new year coming your way.
If you want to eat healthier, find ways to adopt your holiday favorites. If you want to spend wiser, find ways to buy presents that respect your budget and stay within your means.
And you know, all this work for change, it shouldn’t always be a chore.
It should be fun!
If you really want to make a change in your life, it should be because you are stepping into something that you really care about.
If your goal has to do with your diet, find a new recipe or new restaurant that you love that caters to your needs. If your goal has to do with exercise, find a way to move that feels fun and freeing, and ask your loved ones to join in with you!
I know you’re a go getter, a hard worker, and a fighter. You’re not one to wait around. So don’t! Get up off the couch and go fight for your New Year’s goals, starting today.
